For this IDU assessment task students were required to work individually to research the causes and consequences of the violations of one chosen human right on African-American society in the Deep South of the United States, and how these are reflected in Blues music. They needed to reflect on how an interdisciplinary review of human rights from the perspective of the I&S and Music subject groups has helped them better understand the underlying issues addressed by human rights. They needed to synthesise their interdisciplinary understanding through a description of a blues song they had written and composed in music class and how aspects of this relate to the fundamental issues behind specific human rights. They then needed to reflect on the overall experience and how this had helped shape their interdisciplinary understanding of how art represents an important medium of communication via which key messages of social injustice can be conveyed.
